Sport Reports:
Senior Interhouse Cricket Report
By Garth Gerber
Sunday morning proved to clear up nicely for
what was going to be a great day for cricket. Pearce House
Seniors were geared up and ready for our first match versus
Falcon, to be played on Henderson field. On close inspection of
the pitch it was obvious that we needed to bat first.
Unfortunately, the toss did not go our way and the wise Falcon
team put us out in the field. Our spirits were not dampened by
this, however, and we set out to knock over the Falcon team. We
started off well with Falcon being less than ten runs an over on
the small Henderson field. We managed to take an early wicket,
but from then on
Falcon started running away from us. A few of
their batsmen managed to score high runs for their team (Louis
Taylor 100+) and Falcon ended on a high score of 184. We went in
to bat and set off with a great start. We lost our opening pair
on about 70. From here, Pearce gave a lot of heart in our
batting but we were just not good enough and we fell short by 30
runs. The game, though, was held in high spirits and everybody
on the field had fun. Our next game was to be played against
Churchill on the same field. Here we lost the toss yet again and
were put on the field. We bowled well with the odd bad over but
restricted Churchill to 140 runs which is very reachable with
the run rate being less than ten an over. Pearce went in to bat
and gave a great effort until we needed 28 off the last 2 overs.
Unfortunately the ball never found the centre of the bat often
enough and again we fell short, this time by 12 runs. Pearce
House Seniors can admit that the results did not go our way
(They definitely did not
Garth! What are the Dolphins going to
say about your team coming 2nd to last?! - Ed), but
every individual had fun and enjoyed the day. We just want to
send out a friendly warning, though, to the other houses of
Hilton College: Be warned, as next year, Pearce House is on the
march to victory!

Junior Inter House
Cricket
By Rupert
Leslie
On Sunday the 10th
of February the junior inter house cricket matches took place.
It was a knock out tournament to see which house was the best at
cricket in forms 1 and 2. Newnham were clear favourites to win
as they had 7 U 15 A players in their team. Our first match was
against an evenly matched Falcon team.
I lost the toss and
we were put into bat first on a very wet and green pitch. Our
two openers were Travis Gerber and Theuns Nel. Theuns got us off
to a good start before Travis was caught behind for only one
run. This brought me in but I was bowled by a good ball which
hit my foot and went on to hit the stumps. The game continued on
and we were going at about five an over until the last over were
Jonathan Hugo hit 23 runs off a U15 A spinner on the last over.
We then made a quick change and Kyle Pepworth opened the bowling
with Travis Gerber. Kyle got 3 wickets, Travis and Theuns got
two and I got a wicket, took a catch and got a direct hit to run
Liam Walker out. Falcon fell 5 short in the last over in what
turned out to be a very tight match. My man of the match for the
game was Jonathan Hugo for his 40 runs and some very good
keeping.
In the Semi-finals
we came up against a far superior Newnham side. They won the
toss and elected to bat first. Kyle bowled well but for no
reward. Travis however picked up 4 wickets with some superb
bowling. Theuns and I took over the bowling and together we
picked up two more wickets, one each. Bronson also picked up a
wicket at the end of the innings. Despite a good bowling and
fielding display Newnham still managed to get to a large total
of 122/7 off 16 overs. Theuns and Kyle opened for us but Theuns
got out for one. This brought Jonathan Hugo in at 3 and him and
Kyle made a partneship of about thirty. However Kyle went out on
about 18 and this wrought a middle order collapse. We finished
on 42 all out. We lost by 60 runs. My man of the match was
Travis for his four wickets.
Our final match was
against Mckenzie for third and fourth. We batted first and soon
found ourselves 3/2. Jonathan and I salvaged the situation
though with a 40 run partnership. I went out for 13 and Jonathan
went out for 27. After this we lost 2 wickets for very few runs.
However we were once again saved but this time by Ross Jakins
who scored 32 runs. Paul Mcfarlane and Chris De Beer closed off
the innings with a good burst of runs bringing us to a total of
95/9. Mckenzie got off to a flying start with Jason Shield
scoring a fifty of only five overs. They were 68/2 of six overs.
We continued to take wickets steadily but it wasn’t enough as
Jason Shield guided Mckenzie to a victory scoring 78 not out. We
lost by 4 wickets. My man of the match was Ross Jakins for his
innings of 32.
All in all, the day
was fun and there was some very good cricket played. In the end
we came fourth which was good as our team didn’t have the
strongest side. The most valuable player was Jonathan Hugo for
his consistent run scoring and his good keeping. I think I speak
on behalf of the team when I say that we enjoyed it and we can
be proud of how we played.
